Giaccio Named Spartan Athlete of the Week on November 21

YORK, Pa. - York College is pleased to announce that freshman wrestler Joey Giaccio has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance for the Green and White at the Messiah Duals on Saturday in Grantham, Pa.

Giaccio had an outstanding Saturday, winning each of his three matches at 125 as he improves to 5-1 on his young career with the Spartans.  The most significant highlight of his performance was when the rookie defeated Alex Crown of Waynesburg, the nation’s top-ranked Division III wrestler at 125 pounds. Giaccio topped Crown, a 2010-2011 All-American who placed fourth at the NCAA National Championships last year, by a score of 5-0.

The freshman has played a solid role in the Spartans’ success as they have compiled a record of 5-2 on the season, with their two losses coming by a total of just four points.

Having put together a quality start to his collegiate career, Giaccio is no stranger to success.  An alumnus of Cranford High School in New Jersey, Giaccio broke his high school’s wins record as he totaled 129 victories throughout his high school career.

Giaccio and his teammates will return to action Saturday, December 3, as the Green and White host the New Standard Corporation Invitational.  The tournament is slated to begin at 9:30 am in York, Pa.
