YORK, PA - York College is proud to announce that men's basketball senior forward Blayde Reich has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending January 1, 2018.
Reich powered the #25 Spartans to a pair of overtime wins to capture the Washington & Lee Holiday Tournament championship. The Spartans are now 11-0 for the first time in the 49-year history of the men's basketball program.
Reich began his weekend with 15 points and 10 rebounds for his second straight double-double as the Spartans upset #2 Middlebury in overtime in the tournament's opening round. He was 5-for-12 from the floor and 5-for-7 from the line. Reich added three steals, two blocks and an assist in the victory over the Panthers.
Reich saved his best for Saturday as the Spartans came back from an 18-point deficit to pick up a 118-110 overtime win over the host Generals to earn the title. Reich poured in a career-high 44 points while he also pulled in a career-high 19 rebounds. He was 16-for-23 from the floor, 3-for-5 from three and 9-for-12 from the free throw line. His 44 points is tied for second on the Spartans' single-game scoring list while the 19 rebounds are three short of Jason Hunt's school record of 22. Reich also had four assists, a blocked shot, and a steal in the dramatic victory. Nine of his 44 points came in the decisive overtime.
Reich earned tournament MVP honors as he averaged 29.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game. He shot 60% from the floor, 42.9% from three and 73.7% from the free throw line. He has earned the tournament MVP honors in both of York's tournament championships (@ Scranton and @ W&L) this year. His 44 point outburst is the top scoring effort in the CAC this season. His 19 rebounds is also the best single-game performance this year in the CAC, one better than the 18 grabbed by PSU Harrisburg's Gbolahan Alliyu grabbed in the Lions' November 18 win over Immaculata. Reich has a team-leading three double-doubles as they have all come in York's last three games.
For the season, Reich is leading the Spartans in scoring and rebounding at 20.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. He is shooting 55.2% from the floor, 36.1% from three and 71% from the free throw line.
