YORK, PA – York College is proud to announce that junior women’s soccer player Melanie Glessner (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) has been named the Spartan Athlete of the Week for the week ending November 10.
Glessner led her Spartan teammates to a Capital Athletic Conference championship in penalty kicks at top-seeded Christopher Newport on Saturday.
It was what Glessner did in the penalty shootout after a 1-1 in double overtime at CNU that earned her the weekly award. After the Spartans converted the first penalty kick attempt, Glessner stopped four of the five Captains PK attempts with the fifth missing the cage to earn the Spartans their second CAC title in school history.
Glessner was very good in regulation and overtime as she notched six saves before her brilliant performance in the shootout.
Glessner began the week with seven saves in the Spartans’ 3-1 win over Mary Washington at home in the CAC semifinals, punching York's ticket to the CAC finals.
Glessner and the Spartans will now play Carnegie Mellon in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD.
